Devotion to the blood of Christ goes a long way back, as far back as 96 AD, when St Pope Clement advised us to “fix our thoughts on the blood of Christ; and reflect how precious that blood is in God’s eyes, inasmuch as its outpouring for our salvation has opened the grace of repentance to all mankind.” Calling on the Precious Blood is a touching and personal prayer that was written in the mid 1800s and has been used by the faithful for protection against evil and as a call to purification. It’s intense and expresses a deep devotion and an opening up to the love, grace and mercy of Jesus. A daily prayer of dedication, it is a perfect prayer when offering up the self to Jesus. July is the month during which the Church asks us to focus our daily devotions on the precious blood of our Lord.
Calling on the Precious Blood
May the precious blood of Jesus wash over me and through me.
Let it heal any and every wound and scar,
so that the devil may find not purchase in me.
Cause it to saturate and fill up my whole being;
my heart, soul, mind, and body; my memory, and my imagination;
my past and my present; every fibre of my being, every molecule, every atom.
Let there remain no part of me untouched by his precious blood.
Make it flow over and around the altar of my heart on every side.
These things I ask of you, heavenly Father,
in the name of Jesus.
Jesus, likewise grant that the light of your holy Cross
shine in all these same parts of me and my life,
that no darkness remain where the devil may hide or have any influence.
Mary, refuge of sinners, pray for me to receive these graces I ask.
Amen.
