My portion forever

“Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire other than you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion for ever.”

Biblically speaking, the word “portion” refers to a part of something that has been divided up, and commonly applies to the inheritance of land. Each tribe of Israel was granted a “portion” of land to provide food and space for each tribe over consecutive generations. To inherit land meant security, and it also meant that a relationship was in place, one in which there was an entitlement to receive.

We are God’s children, therefore an entitlement is established and, as such, we are rightful inheritors of what God bestows. It means we are taken care of, now and in perpetuity. This is security for our souls, just like the material security given to the twelve tribes when they inherited their lands through God’s grace and bounty.

This psalm is a statement of our satisfaction and fulfillment in God. God himself is our portion; we haven’t inherited land, we have inherited God himself. We don’t desire material wealth or anything that is present on earth, and in heaven, there is only God, and the full expanse of his glory. God is the one thing that we treasure above all things; everything else just fades into the background. And how wonderful it is, what blessed relief we feel, knowing that all is taken care of, and that we don’t have to worry about anything; God is all we need, and he is there for us. When we reach journey’s end and come face to face with our creator God we will receive the fullness of our inheritance, our portion. God is our one desire and the strength of our hearts
