“Fight the good fight of the faith; take hold of the eternal life, to which you were called and for which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.”
Recently I watched a Youtube video about how to build your “brand.” Not sure why I tuned into this one, but marketing is a fascinating subject, and it was only fifteen minutes, and so I thought, why not. Much of the presenter’s attention was focused on the amount of work and application needed, as well as an obsessive attitude to the goal. And of course, one must be passionate and single minded about the thing that you’re working on. It may be music, design, literature, whatever. The work and the business is an all encompassing occupation that takes up all your time and effort. These appear to be prerequisites for building up a successful brand that people will want to buy into.
He has some good points, but I thought about it more deeply. Some people are keen to take hold of something and run with it to the extent that their ideas can become powerful, global phenomena. Think Bill Gates or Steve Jobs. I’m sure they fought for what they desired. And I thought, what does that mean to me as a follower of Jesus Christ?
In Paul’s letter to Timothy, he urges Timothy to “fight the good fight of the faith.” If we have professed faith in our Lord, to God, and to others, then our passion, energy and all our efforts should be directed outwards, towards God in the world, and all creation. Jesus Christ is the brand that we are pushing, and spreading to a public that is sorely in need of God’s love. Through God’s grace, we have been called to do this, and it’s a serious call that we need to listen to. It’s not about making a lot of money, or getting thousands of views, it’s about putting out God’s word and expressing God’s love. It’s about taking hold of the eternal life. This is the mission statement that we look at every morning when we face the new day.
