We proclaim Christ

This text is based on Paul’s writings in 1 Corinthians; I’ve taken the liberty to generalise a little in order for it to speak to a modern audience. Many people seek God and seek him in different ways, but in Paul’s words we find a fundamental and earth shaking truth. Paul speaks about Christ’s power all the time. When it comes to connecting with almighty God, signs and demonstrations, proofs and formulas aren’t the answer, and neither is “conventional wisdom.” Paul tells us that the answer is simple. He says, “we proclaim Christ crucified.”

When we dive deeper into this simple sentence, the impact is huge. To understand God and our relationship to him, we need look no further than the Cross. Jesus, our Lord, suffered humiliation, torture and an ignoble death by crucifixion, all for the great love that God bears for us. This sacrifice declares who and what God is so loudly.

Is God all powerful? Yes, and we know that because of the cross. Is God all loving? Yes, and we know that because of the cross. Is our God a merciful God? Yes, and we know that because of the cross. All the attributes we can see that God has were made evident at Calvary.

Christians are set apart because of the cross, we are “the called.” We have a God who was willing to go through this for our sake. He paid the debt, and we belong to him. I can’t think of anything more awesome than this. It’s the kind of thought that makes us fall down on our knees in gratitude.

Paul says that the bottom line about our faith is the fact that Jesus died on the cross and conquered sin. The stark and immutable reality of the Cross has bound us to our Creator God, and has joined us to him forever. And that’s a long long time.
