How do you pray when your heart is so full of love for your Lord that you feel like it’s going to burst? Often it is hard to find the right words to express the immensity of our feelings; sometimes we just sit quietly and allow ourselves to feel the love. At other times we just let the words come out, spontaneous, untidy, but full of truth and honesty. Devotional prayer allows us to open ourselves up completely to Jesus, and to throw ourselves unashamedly at his precious feet. This kind of prayer gives the soul wings, and we are left with a feeling of immense gratitude that we are loved right back, ten thousand fold, by our loving Saviour.
Not only is devotional prayer uplifting, but it is grounding too. If I’m overwhelmed by problems or concerns, saying, “Jesus, I love you,” puts everything in perspective, and it brings Jesus close to me in a tangible way. I picture him here with me, and I say the words out loud, just like I’d say them to anyone I hold dear here in the material plane of existence. For I know that he is here with me, just as real as anyone living with me. How natural it is to tell Jesus that you care about him, and that you love him, especially when you think about how much he loves each and every one of us.
This is one of those prayers:
Jesus I love you,
With a love that I cannot describe in words,
With a love so all-embracing,
With a love so great, that I disappear.
Make me one with you, As you are one with the Father and the Spirit:
One God, my God, forever and ever.
Amen
