The strength of all our living days

Lord God and Maker of all Things is beautiful hymn that was composed by the Benedictine Nuns of the Conventus of Our Lady of Consolation in Stanbrook Abbey in north Yorkshire. It has become a part of the LIturgy of the Hours, to be read or sung during the Midday Prayer. The power of this poetry lies in its expression of trust in our Maker and the sense of the infinite, the everlasting nature of God. Change is often something that is difficult for us to deal with because it can be destabilising and make us fearful and anxious. But often it is unavoidable and inexorable. The flux and the shocks and surprises keep coming. We crave a solid foundation so that even when change occurs, we can still remain strong and secure in our faith. We know that we can depend on the One who is unchanging and ever present. Without God as our anchor, we are tossed about in the storms of life. And even while our bodies change and sometimes let us down, our spirit is always renewed, and always at peace in our Lord. That surely is something to sing about, and something that we need to keep reminding ourselves of; incorporating these words in our daily contemplations or during our time of prayer, anchors our faith and gives us a safe harbour.

As the writer of the letter to the Hebrews so confidently states in chapter 13 verse 8: Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever!

Lord God and Maker of all things,
Creation is upheld by you.
While all must change and know decay,
You are unchanging, always new.

You are our solace and our shield,
Our Rock secure on which to build.
You are the spirit’s tranquil home,
In you alone is hope fulfilled.

To God the Father and the Son
And Holy Spirit render praise:
Blest Trinity, from age to age
The strength of all our living days.
