Worship services at our church usually get going with a strong prayer of praise. It puts us into the right mindset for worship because we’re instantly faced with the greatness of God and our total dependence on him. It engenders humility and openness, a perfect combination for believers to immerse themselves in the hour or so that follows, filling them with the love of God, obedience and reverence. This prayer resonates with quiet majesty and awe.
Loving God, each day your spirit is with us,
your love surrounds us.
Open our eyes to your grace and blessings.
You are the morning light that wakes us
and the calm of evening that closes our day.
You are birdsong and sunset,
the fire of midday and the cool of night.
You are every breath we take
and the wellspring of every prayer we make.
Here us as we pray in open hearted praise and thanks
for all the gifts you shower upon us.
All our thoughts are known to you
and into your hands we place our hopes, fears and dreams.
Precious lord, you are the Alpha and Omega,
the beginning and the end.
You are our creator and our counsellor,
guiding us daily to make wise decisions.
You are our comforter in sorrow, and pain or distress.
Holy Lord, how constant is your care and protection,
how bountiful your mercy.
No matter what turmoil besets our hearts or what trouble befalls us,
we can rely on your strength to hold us and guide us to our safe harbour.
We praise you for drawing near to us,
and for opening your arms when we draw near to you.
May we forever be ready to raise up our hearts to you
in faithfulness and love.
You are the God who sees us, you are our eternal Lord,
and there is no love greater than yours.
Our God and our shelter, day in and day out,
Amen.
