On you I was cast from my birth, and since my mother bore me you have been my God.
How definite and deliberate are these confident words from Psalm 22! When we are born we are sent into the world, set adrift, like a castaways. Many of us do not know where the tide will take us or which shore we will be washed up on. Sometimes it’s a friendly shore, but for many of us it isn’t. Sometimes it’s hostile. From the very beginning we are directionless, and our journey will expose us to many circumstances, many currents of thought, some useful, some unhelpful. How many faiths, beliefs, and gods are our there? But it is of no use to go searching for a mysterious something when we have all we need already. Sometimes it is only when troubles occur and all seems hopeless that we realise who has been there all along and which shore we have been cast upon from the moment we were born. But no matter where we land, we are also cast upon God from the very beginning of our lives, and it is on this shore that we find our rest and our solid ground. Psalm 22 is the psalm that Jesus is referencing when he cries out “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” This is not a statement of despair but a reminder to his followers that God is ever present and will not forsake them, that God has been there from the very first. He is my God, he is your God. We belong to him and he belongs to us, no matter what happens, now and for all eternity, without fail.
In this regard, the words of Paul to the Romans, hits home:
For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. -Romans 8:38-39
I know, that I have a God and that he has been my God all the way along. If we can declare this confidently and with resolve, nothing can shake us.
God bless!
