Would’st thou learn the Lord’s meaning in this thing? Learn it well: love is it’s meaning. Who showed it thee? Love. What showed it thee? Love. Wherefore showed it thee? For Love. Hold thee therein and thou shalt learn and know more in the same. But thou shalt never know nor learn therein other thing without end. Thus was it I learned that love was our Lord’s meaning. – Blessed Julian of Norwich: Revelations of Divine Love (1342-c.1416)
We are so fortunate to be able to read the transcendent writings of Blessed Julian of Norwich, an anchorite and Christian mystic living during the Middle Ages. She opens our eyes to the fundamental nature of the divine and reminds us and beseeches us to not forget that Jesus came to us and became human for the love of us all. Love is indeed the answer and our first lesson, and down through the centuries, Julian has encouraged us to “learn it well.”
