Corpus Christi, also known as the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, is celebrated on the Thursday following Trinity Sunday. Corpus Christi translates to the body and blood of Christ and on this day we take time to focus on Jesus present and alive in the bread and wine of the Eucharist. Jesus in his final days on earth, when he instituted this holy sacrament, asked his beloved disciples to remember him in the breaking of the bread and the drinking of wine. At the last supper, he broke the bread and stated, “this is my body.” How much love was contained in this one gesture. Jesus was letting us know that he would be with us, visible and real, in the consecrated bread and wine of the Eucharist, a physical reminder of his constancy and love.
Hymn of Praise.
Godhead here in hiding, whom I do adore,
Masked by these bare shadows, faith and nothing more.
See, Lord, at thy service low lies here a heart
Lost, all lost in wonder at the God thou art.
Being, touching, tasting are in thee deceived.
How says trusty hearing? That shall be believed.
What God’s Son hath told me, take for truth I do;
Truth himself speaks truly, or there’s nothing true.
On the Cross thy Godhead made no sign to men;
Here thy very manhood steals from human ken;
Both are my confession, both are my belief,
And I pray the prayer of the dying thief.
( Penned by St.Thomas Aquinas)
