St Francis’ prayer before the crucifix

Saint Francis of Assisi was a 12th century Catholic friar and preacher who founded the Franciscan Order and also assisted to establish the Order of St. Clare, and the lay Third Order of Saint Francis. One of the most venerated religious figures in history and a most well-loved saint, he also wrote a great many beautiful and heartfelt prayers and hymns. This is one of my favourite St Francis prayers and it is easy to learn by heart, and to say when we need to strengthen our faith.

Most high glorious God,
cast your light into the darkness of my heart.
Give me right faith, firm hope, perfect charity
and profound humility,
with wisdom of perfection,
O Lord, so that I may do
what is truly your holy will.
Amen.
